Congressman John Lewis sent me a message by email yesterday.
Of course thousands of people received the same message. Still, seeing my name at the beginning of the letter gave me the feeling he was talking to me. Specifically drawing me into his circle.
Congressman Lewis’s message was about commemorating the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. Congressman Lewis had marched with King, and he was beaten within inches of his life by a policeman. Lewis was one of 10 speakers at the Washington Monument in 1963, when Martin Luther King gave his “dream” speech.
The words of Congressman John Lewis – his email sent personally to me – were so moving I decided to share them in a PDF file. You can download the message below, after the videos.

He Taught Us To Be Brave
In the first video, Congressman Lewis discusses the assassination of Martin Luther King with former president Barack Obama. The discussion is held as a function of My Brother’s Keeper, a program started by President Obama to “help our young people stay on track,” and to provide support for youth to think and act to build their future.
The second video is an interview with a witness to the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King. The video is valuable as a look at a historical event as seen through the eyes of one of the workers at the motel where Reverend King was staying.
While the videos commemorate a particularly tragic time in the history of the nation, and the world, at the same time they remind us that there have been and still are people of great courage and conviction. . . Real leaders who not only speak the truth, but also inspire millions of people to be brave and work toward a better life for all people.
